The dysphagia of older people is a common problem often overlooked by healthcare professionals. The literature suggests that this is related to the lack of compliance with standard swallowing assessment tools. The present study aimed to examine the ability of an older-people-specific clinical tool to detect aspiration during screening of a group of older people. A total of 207 community-dwelling older people were screened. The Deglutition and Swallowing Screening (DOSS) tool was compared with a clinical assessment of swallowing (coder blinded) to determine its effectiveness in identifying those who had aspiration. The DOSS tool was found to have sensitivity (91%) and positive predictive value (93%) in identifying aspiration risk. It was concluded that the DOSS tool identified older people with a greater risk of aspiration and should, therefore, be used in routine clinical practice to identify those who may be at risk of aspiration.Most of today’s digital gadgets are made of one or more polymers, which often have some health risks to humans and the environment. Now, scientists in Denmark have made a tiny 3D printer using plastic made by microorganisms rather than those of human origin. The researchers from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) report that their synthetic plastic, made from bacterial cells, lacks the toxicity often found in plastics made by chemical processes. “Traditionally, the plastic in everyday products has been made from crude oil or petroleum. This is both fossil-based and contributes to the enormous carbon footprint of modern civilization,” says lead author, Dr. Roland Enserink. “Bioplastic is still a new concept, but has some potential as a way of limiting the use of fossil energy. Enserink and his colleagues used the bacterium Clostridium cellulovorans, found in the guts of ruminants, to make the new bioplastic.
